At Riverside Leadership Academy, learning comes to life through Project-Based Learning (PBL), an instructional approach that engages scholars in meaningful, hands-on experiences connected to real-world challenges.

Through PBL, scholars explore complex questions, problems, or challenges over an extended period of time. Rather than simply memorizing information, students actively investigate, collaborate, and apply what they learn to create high-quality work. Projects are thoughtfully designed and aligned to academic standards, ensuring that scholars master essential content while also developing critical life skills.

Rigorous and meaningful Project-Based Learning at RLA:

• Teaches essential academic content

  • Projects are grounded in state standards and key concepts from core academic subjects. 

  • Learning goals are clear, intentional, and aligned to what scholars need to know and be able to do.

• Builds critical 21st-century skills

  • Scholars practice collaboration, communication, critical thinking, and problem-solving throughout every project. 

  • They learn to listen to others, express their ideas clearly, read and analyze a variety of texts, write for different purposes, and present their learning confidently.

• Encourages deep inquiry and curiosity

  • Learning begins with a compelling entry event that sparks curiosity and creates a genuine need to know. 

  • Scholars ask questions, research answers, analyze information, and draw conclusions as they work toward a meaningful outcome.

• Is driven by an open-ended question

  • Each project is organized around a driving question that frames learning and encourages deeper thinking about important issues, challenges, or real-world problems.

• Promotes student voice and choice

  • Scholars are given opportunities to make decisions about their learning, helping them develop independence, responsibility, and ownership. 

  • Choice also increases engagement and allows students to express their learning in ways that reflect their strengths and interests.

• Includes reflection and revision

  • Scholars regularly reflect on their learning and receive feedback from peers and teachers. 

  • They learn that high-quality work improves through revision, persistence, and thoughtful reflection

• Connects learning to a real audience

  • Every project culminates in an authentic presentation of learning, where scholars share their work with an audience beyond the classroom, such as families, community members, or industry partners. This raises expectations and makes learning more meaningful.

At Riverside Leadership Academy, PBL is not an “extra” or an add-on, it is the heart of instruction. We believe projects should frame the curriculum, not follow it. Through PBL the RLA Way, scholars don’t just learn about the world, they actively engage with it, building the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to become leaders in their community.
